MetLife Mobile Application Privacy Policy

The companies in the MetLife, Inc. family (collectively, “MetLife”) recognize the importance of protecting all information that you may choose to provide to us.  To further this commitment, we have adopted this MetLife Mobile Application Privacy Policy (“This Policy”) to tell you how we collect, store, and use the information you provide to us in connection with the MetLife Mobile software application (the “App”).  We also have other more general privacy policies that may apply to you as a MetLife consumer or customer.  For more information about our privacy policies other than This Policy, please visit us at www.metlife.com/about/privacy.

BY INSTALLING, USING, REGISTERING OR OTHERWISE ACCESSING THE APP, YOU AGREE TO THIS POLICY AND GIVE AN EXPLICIT AND INFORMED CONSENT TO THE PROCESSING OF YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION IN ACCORDANCE WITH THIS POLICY.  IF YOU DO NOT AGREE TO THIS POLICY, PLEASE DO NOT INSTALL, USE, REGISTER OR OTHERWISE ACCESS THE APP.  MetLife reserves the right to modify This Policy from time to time, so please review it regularly.  Your continued use of the App will signify your acceptance of any changes to This Policy.

What information does This Policy cover?

This Policy only applies to personal information collected in connection with downloading, registering, or using the App, and does not apply to information collected by MetLife through any other means.  Only United States customer data is accessible through this App.

This Policy covers how we collect, use, and share personal information in connection with the App as of the date that This Policy is posted.

What types of personal information do we collect about App users?

Personal information is information that identifies you and can be used to contact you directly.  Situations when you make personal information available to MetLife include but are not limited to: (i) registration of the App; (ii) applying for or obtaining a MetLife product or service; (iii) asking to receive information about our products or services; (iv) participating in any MetLife promotion or survey, (iv) registering to access your financial information; (v) requesting technical support; and (vi) otherwise using the App where personal information is required. MetLife Pocket Pass users wishing to update any of their personal information should send an email to metlifecentral@metlife.com requesting their desired change.

 

 

The types of personal information may vary depending on the activity you are engaged in.  The personal information MetLife may collect and process includes, but is not limited to your name, screen name, account or policy number, social security number, telephone number, e-mail address, phone number, photo or other image, birthdate, sex, address, credit card information, debit card information, checking account information, shipping information, and location.  Your location information is collected only with your permission through use of geolocation services.  Should you choose not to permit access to your location information, not all App features will be available to you. 

Children

We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under the age of 13.  If a parent or guardian becomes aware that his or her child has provided us with their information, that parent or guardian should contact us at privacy@metlife.com.  We will delete any information regarding a child under the age of 13 within a reasonable time.  MetLife takes children’s privacy seriously, and encourages parents and/or guardians to play an active role in their children’s online experience at all times.

How is your personal information used and shared?

We will only collect information to the extent reasonably necessary to fulfill your requests and our legitimate business objectives.  We may also use and disclose your personal information to our affiliates and others for any purpose allowed by law.

MetLife App Activities and Updates

For example, we use and may disclose your personal information to:

  • authenticate your identity
  • process your registration of the App and administer your account information
  • process an application for our products  
  • process payments
  • analyze use of the App
  • provide customer and technical support
  • further develop the App and other products and services
  • respond to your information requests
  • send you newsletters and updates
  • provide you with additional materials that may be of interest, including marketing materials
  • for other everyday business purposes, such as product development

Data Retention

We will retain your data for as long as you use the App and for a reasonable time thereafter or as required by law.  If you would like for us to delete the data you have provided or that we have otherwise collected in relation to the App, e-mail us at privacy@metlife.com, and we will comply within a reasonable time unless we are legally required to retain the information.  Please note that some or all of your personal information may be necessary in order for the App to function properly.

Purchase or Sale of Businesses

From time to time, we may purchase a business or sell one or more of our businesses and your personal information may be transferred as a part of the purchase or sale.  If we purchase a business, the personal information received with that business would be treated in accordance with all of our privacy policies, including This Policy, if it is practicable and permissible to do so.  If we sell a business, we will include provisions in the selling contract requiring the purchaser to treat your personal information in accordance with applicable law.  The provisions of this paragraph will also apply if we are sold as part of bankruptcy proceedings.

Disclosures as Permitted or Required By Law

MetLife is committed to protecting your personal information.  We may disclose information as permitted or required by law.

Third Party Terms and Conditions

 

Please note that your access to and use of the App may be subject to certain third party terms and conditions and privacy policies, including but not limited to application stores and mobile software platforms.  You recognize and agree that MetLife is not liable for any such third party terms and conditions and their use of your personal information.  MetLife may in its discretion make available links through advertisements or otherwise enable you to access third party products or services.  Please note that while using such products or services, you are using products or services developed and administered by people or companies not affiliated with or controlled by MetLife.  MetLife is not responsible for the actions of those people or companies, the content of their products or services, the use of information you provide to them, or any products or services they may offer.  The fact that MetLife is linking to those products or services does not constitute our sponsorship of or affiliation with those people or companies. 

What choices do you have about the collection, use, and sharing of your personal information?

We don’t share App users’ personal information with unaffiliated third parties for their own direct marketing purposes. 

At this time, our apps and websites do not respond to browser Do Not Track signals or similar mechanisms.

If you sign up to receive newsletters or other e-mail messages from us, you can opt-out any time by clicking the unsubscribe link at the bottom of the message.    

What kinds of security measures do we take to safeguard your personal information?

 

MetLife follows generally accepted industry standards and maintains reasonable and appropriate safeguards to ensure the security, integrity, and confidentiality of the information in MetLife’s possession.  Only those persons with a need to access your personal information in connection with the fulfillment of their tasks in accordance with the purposes of This Policy and for the purposes of performing technical maintenance have access to your personal information in MetLife’s possession.  Personal information collected by MetLife is stored in secure operating environments that are not available to the public.  We have technical, administrative, and physical security measures in place to protect your personal information from unauthorized access and improper use.  For example, the parts of the App that enable or require you to submit personal information online use encryption technology to protect that information.  We also review our security procedures periodically to consider appropriate new technology.  However, no system can be 100% secure and there is the possibility that despite MetLife’s reasonable efforts, there could unauthorized access to your personal information.  By using the App, you assume the risk.

How will you know if we amend this This Policy?

We may amend This Policy at any time.  You should review This Policy regularly for any changes.  If we make any material change in how we collect your personal information online, or how we use or share it, we will prominently post notice of the change on this page.  Any material changes to This Policy will be effective 10 days after our posting of notice of the changes.
